Erwinville — Two people are dead after an early morning house fire on Saturday, according to West Baton Rouge Fire officials.

Fire crews arrived around 5:15 a.m. to find a residence on Maple Street in Erwinville engulfed in flames. Fire Chief Butch Browning said the victims were a 72-year-old woman and her 48-year-old son.

Investigators stated that the fire was originally reported by a driver traveling on Highway 190.

According to fire officials, the home had no working smoke alarms.

"At this point, we don't believe there were working smoke alarms in that home. If you don't have one right now, you need to take action to get one. I think neighbors need to be checking on neighbors. Families need to be checking on the older people in their families," said Chief Browning.

Neighbors and family members described the victims as kindhearted, good people.

Chief Browning said 25 firefighters responded to the call. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, investigators have not ruled out the possibility of an electrical malfunction.
