BATON ROUGE — Albertsons on College Drive is closing in two months, the company announced Tuesday.

The last day of sales at the store, located just off the Interstate, is Aug. 16.

"In such a competitive environment, our company must sometimes make the tough decision to close an underperforming store so that we can reinvest in our remaining stores in the marketplace," an Albertsons Companies Southern Division spokesperson said.

John Hide, who's a regular, says he was surprised to hear the news.

"I come here every day," Hide said. "I always thought Walmart and Albertsons were in competition, I just wouldn't think it would shut them down like this."

All Albertsons Pharmacy prescriptions will be transferred to the nearby Albertsons at 7515 Perkins Road when the College Drive pharmacy closes June 24.

There is no indication in the store that this is happening.

Nancy Dupuy has been going to this location for years, and didn't know the pharmacy was closing until a friend told her.

“Whats really disturbing to me is that they're no effort to their customers this is happening and I find that appalling," Dupuy said.

She said she's gotten her prescriptions here because it was the more affordable option for her.

"I'm on Medicare, and the prescription drug plan I have is an Albertsons," Dupuy said.

Regional management added that they are working to place the College store's associates to nearby locations, asking customers to shop at remaining Albertsons locations throughout Baton Rouge.
