DONALDSONVILLE — A 27-year-old Walker man died after a crash on LA 1 Monday morning, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers said they started investigating shortly after 6 a.m. near Stewart Road on LA 1 in Ascension Parish.

According to the preliminary investigation, 48-year-old James Cascio of Addis was driving a 2012 Ford F-150 southbound on LA 1 while a 2004 Honda Pilot was heading northbound. State police said the F-150 crossed the centerline and hit the Honda in the northbound lane.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, police said. Cascio had moderate injuries and went to a local hospital, while the Honda driver had life-threatening injuries and died at a local hospital.

Troopers said impairment is not suspected and routine toxicology samples will be taken for analysis. Cascio was arrested on charges of negligent homicide and careless operation and will be booked into the Ascension Parish Jail after he is released from the hospital.
