MORGAN CITY — The Morgan City Police Department issued a statement after a video claimed police damaged a vehicle during an illegal stop.

The video from Brandon Hebert, which has 175,000 views on Facebook, said the driver was returning from a concert in Houston when the vehicle was pulled over for swerving in Morgan City; a police dog then "hit for drugs," leading to the driver being thrown into a holding cell, the video said.

"They tear her car to... pieces trying to find some dope, and then they don't find anything," Hebert said. "No ticket, no reason for stopping her, illegal stop."

The video also showed the vehicle with parts pulled off it, including the middle seats being dislodged and other pieces.

Morgan City Police Chief Chad Adams issued a statement saying that the city of Houston was "a city documented by law enforcement as a source area for narcotics trafficking" and that the inside of the vehicle was in "some disarray."

"During the course of the routine traffic stop, a Morgan City Police Department K-9 was deployed to conduct a free-air sniff of the exterior of the vehicle. The K-9 subsequently alerted to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle," Adams said.

Adams said officers conducted a search and saw "multiple interior panels that were damaged, loose, or not properly secured." The driver told police she had been stopped by another law-enforcement agency in South Texas two months prior, leading to damage to interior panels.

Officers elected to seek a search warrant before conducting a more thorough examination of the vehicle, Adams said. The driver was told she was free to leave, but chose to remain with the vehicle during the search. She waited in the lobby, police said.

"She was not under arrest or confined and remained free to leave at any time," Adams said.

Police said they found more damaged and unsecured panels during the search, saying "Morgan City Police Department officers did not damage the vehicle during the search." However, the department said that when the vehicle was returned, "several small interior trim pieces were not fully secured" due to a "miscommunication among officers concerning whether all of those pieces had been placed back into their original positions before the vehicle was released."

"The Morgan City Police Department acknowledges that those pieces should have been addressed with the driver more clearly before the vehicle was returned," Adams said.

Adams also said that "portions of law-enforcement encounters viewed on social media may not always provide the full context surrounding an investigation."
