HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University's Contemporary Art Gallery will present a solo exhibition by Artist-in-Residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art Addoley Dzegede.

Titled "Arsenal," the exhibition opens Oct. 6 and runs through Nov. 5.

A textile dyeing workshop with Dzegede is also scheduled Nov. 2 at 12 p.m., as well as an artist talk on Nov. 5 at 4 p.m., in the gallery.

Gallery Director Cristina Molina says Arsenal looks back to the middle of the 19th century when a monumental shift in color began to take place.

"This exhibition examines these transitions through an exploration of both natural and synthetic dyes, deploying an arsenal of techniques using batik, screen printing, mordant painting, and other dyeing methods," Molina said. "The title Arsenal refers to the colonial battles over sourcing natural dyes from the global South, the connection between dye chemistry and weapons of war, and the range of methods developed over centuries around the world to create pattern and color using dyes."

Expanding the exhibition's engagement with textile histories and contemporary material practices, Arsenal also features moving-image works by contemporary artists Carolina Caycedo, Rachel De Cuba and Kelly Jin Mei, Molina added. Each artist incorporates textile references into their moving-image practice, extending the exhibition's exploration of pattern, embodiment, labor, and material transformation into the cinematic realm.

"Through its convergence of historical research, textile processes, and contemporary moving image, Arsenal invites audiences to consider color as both a material phenomenon and a site of cultural, political and technological entanglement," Molina explained.

The gallery will hold a closing reception on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
