BATON ROUGE — Students at Melrose Elementary School received new shoes through a community giveaway on Tuesday.

Volunteers with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, Healthy Blue Louisiana and other community organizations handed out shoes to 309 kids in partnership with Operation Warm.

"I truly appreciate the different community partners that come to our school because a lot of time we don't have that here," Principal Olga Park said. "So when they come, we really want to make them know that we appreciate them and my kids too. They appreciate it because there's a big need here at the Foundational Learning Center."

The event also included LSU cheer team members and Mike the Tiger.
