BATON ROUGE — A control structure at the eastern entrance of the Comite River Diversion Channel is taking shape as foundation work moves forward, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 

According to the project update, about 1,588 of 2,272 H-piles have been driven into the ground. More than 3,000 cubic yards of concrete have been placed on top of those piles to support the foundation.

The control structure is designed to divert flood flows from the Comite River into the new diversion channel. From there, water will travel approximately 12 miles toward the Mississippi River.

The control structure is considered a critical component of the overall channel project. Its completion would mark a major step forward in flood risk reduction for the Capital Region.

The project is set to be complete by spring of 2028.
