DONALDSONVILLE — The Donaldsonville City Council has unanimously approved rezoning land to make way for a new subdivision on the west bank of Ascension Parish.

The council voted to rezone 52 acres of commercial property for the Cane Field Crossing neighborhood, which is planned for Thibaut Drive.

The subdivision will include more than 170 homes. Mayor Leroy Sullivan said the city is preparing for growth tied to the Hyundai Steel Plant, which is expected to bring thousands of jobs to the area.

"With all the traffic coming through the city of Donaldsonville, we want people to stop here, eat here and want some of them to stay here to live here," Sullivan said.

With the vote complete, the developer can now move forward with the permitting process.
